My friend Janae played me a couple of songs sung by Missy Higgins while we were shoe shopping and showed me some of her videos on YouTube and I was hooked. She has a couple songs on the radio so she might be familiar to some of you but she isn't that famous...yet. I downloaded a bunch of her songs and got really familiar with her music and style and then Janae told me that she was performing in an Underground Lounge that B93 radio station puts on every so often. An Underground Lounge is always an exclusive, small venue concert. Janae and I tried to get put on the guest list for several days but had no luck. We decided it would be totally worth it to drive to the location in Modesto and just try our luck at getting in. The venue was Tresetti's World Cafe. A great little bar and restaurant with fabulous wall art. We spoke to the girl inside at the doorway to the long, narrow room that the concert would be taking place in. We had her check the guest list even though we knew we wouldn't be on it. Then we explained our situation, told her we tried to get on the guest list, but obviously couldn't, but came hoping we could get in anyway. She said to take a seat in the waiting area and she would have the people in charge come talk to us.
While we were waiting we heard someone say "Okay, bring her in." Who else could they be talking about but Missy Higgins so we kept a look out for her while we waited. Then one of the B93 DJs, Angie Good, came and introduced herself to us and we asked if there was any way we could get in even though we weren't on the list. She told us she'd check if there were seats available and came back a minute later and said there were but they weren't in the same row. We thanked her profusely as she started to lead us to our seats. When we were walking in Missy Higgins was just walking in also through a different door. I nearly ran into her, seriously. Our seats were super close to the front. Really every seat was super close because of the smallness of the room. Janae sat just one row in front of me so we could talk to each other despite not sitting next to each other. Missy started out with one of my favorites of hers, Sugarcane. Her set also included Steer, Wrong Girl, Going North, Secret, Where I Stood and some others I can't remember but were incredible. She accompanied herself on either the guitar or keyboard for each song. Missy is this small little person who sings at the top of her lungs perfectly and effortlessly. Her talents are spectacular to watch. The concert really only lasted about a half hour and when it was over Janae and I politely pushed our way to the front while everyone else was heading for the back, the opposite of where Missy was. What were they thinking, Janae and I told ourselves. We waited next to a couple other people who were talking to her and waiting to talk to her. When finally it was our turn her "people" took her away so she could autograph posters and take pictures with everyone. So just as we were first in line to talk to her we then had to go to the back of a huge line to wait to talk to her again. When it was our turn she asked us our names and signed cute posters of herself and let us take pictures of us with her. I apologized to her for not wearing makeup because we were in such a rush to get to there. And she said that it probably wouldn't matter anyway because we were using cell phones to take the pictures and they never take very good pictures.
Janae and I then left in fabulous moods because we made it into the concert, got to see an amazing performance, met and talked to Missy Higgins, got signed posters that said "To Christina <3 Missy" and to top it all off we didn't even have to pay for parking in downtown Modesto!
This music video is of the song "Where I Stood" one of my favs and played on the radio around here. If you're interested in hearing more from her then go to YouTube.
